How to Install a Woodford Frost Proof Yard Hydrant

Woodford Mfg. is well known for high quality yard hydrants and outdoor faucets, with many frost-proof versions available that provide reliable irrigation solutions in freezing temperature conditions.  Installing a Woodford yard hydrant is a great way to provide worry-free water flow to areas that need it even during winter temperatures.  When taking care of livestock, ranches, farms, or outdoor properties, reliable irrigation is a must.  

Learn how to install a Woodford yard hydrant and never worry about having a fresh water supply again.  Here are the simple to follow instructions for installing a Woodford Yard hydrant: 

1)  Dig a hole for your hydrant that is deeper than the bury depth and about 2 ft. in diameter.

2) Flush out debris, gravel, etc. from the supply line prior to connecting the hydrant.

3) Install the hydrant with the drain hole below the frost line.  Use wrenches on the supply line fitting and brass valve body only to prevent over-tightening the hydrant assembly as that can affect the operation of the hydrant. 

4)  If the supply line does not support the hydrant, use a suitable support driven in the bottom of the pit like pipe or rebar to support the hydrant.  

5)  Check the hydrant connection for leaks by turning on the water, prior to filling the excavation.

6)  Make provisions to allow water to drain from the hydrant drain hole every time the hydrant is closed.  

a)  If installing the hydrant inside a concrete driveway, or inside a structure, connect a 1/8” copper drain tubing to the drain hole and dig a remote drain field outside for the drain pipe to empty into.  If this remote piping drain field is not installed, water from the hydrant drainage will surface near the hydrant and cause muddy areas or damage to floor surfaces. 

b)  If the ground in the hydrant drain field gets saturated, it can prevent the hydrant from fully draining and can cause freezing.  A larger drain field may be required to give the hydrant a place to drain in areas that have a tendency to have standing water. 

c) Be sure to fill the bottom of the pit with ½” gravel up to about 3” above where the brass drain valve body is, to provide proper drainage.
